Notes for Edward Rutty Brinsdon:
In a letter from Lucy Mattingly ( James Granddaughter)she recalled stories her aunts told of Edward Rutty`s birthday, when the family would gather and the meal was put outside on trestles, with plenty to eat. The children played on vines in the nearby bush. They also went to Green Island beach for one birthday.Their father had an Express, a horse and cart used for his carrying business, sothe family traveled in style.
Edward Rutty Brinsdon was one of the foundersof the Morning ton Baptist church. After his wife died he spent Sundays with James and Ruth arriving at their Mornington home(now the site of Countdown) in hishorse and gig. His grandchildren went to church with him, daring each other to ask him for a half penny, always getting a penny. It is understood that Edward had a tannery in Kokoris Valley Road,
and owned land from Kokoris Valley Road to the top of Stone Street. Edward looked at Australia and Canada before decidingon New Zealand as his new home.
Edward Rutty Brinsdon was apprenticed at theage of sixteen on the 7th of January 1869 to James Smith for a term of 7 yearslearning the art of Currier and Leather Dressing.(in Devizes, Wiltshire).the apprenticeship papers are signed by Edward R.Brinsdon and Susannah Brinsdon and also James Smith.
