Samuel moved from Montgomery County, North Carolina to Carroll County, TN about 1824 with his first wife, Martha (Cothen) and their daughter Martha. Samuel was a mill wright and a farmer. He had at least seven children with Martha, who died in 1845.

He married second Mary J. Thomason in 1846. They had four known children.
