John was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He moved to Tennessee, where most or all of his children were born. He later moved to Yalobusha County Mississippi, where he died.

John is listed in the 1840 U.S. Census of Yalobusha County, MS. He also appears there in the 1850 Census with his wife Sarah and son Thomas. Thomas' wife and four children are listed.

John's descendants used the spelling "Swearengen." I have kept the spelling as Swearingen because his will spells it that way.

    John Swearingen's will names family members and "negro girl named Nancy, now about twelve years old daughter of my Negro woman Harriet." Names wife Sarah, son Thomas W. Swearingen [executor], John's deceased son Samuel, living children William W., George, and Eliza Lawson. Also Sarah Elizabeth & Eliza Jane Swearingen, daughters of Samuel. Granddaughters Mary Jane & Martha Ann Duke. It is unclear who the parents of the Duke sisters were; presumably a deceased daughter.
