Samuel Singleton was baptised on 13th October 1846 at Foston in Lincolnshire, the eldest child of Eliza Worth Singleton, formerly Bonser, and her husband Robert Singleton, a coachman and groom. Robert and Eliza had married in January 1846 at Eliza's native East Stoke in Nottinghamshire, but then clearly returned to Robert's native Foston before Samuel was born. Samuel was one of three boys called Samuel Singleton born in Foston in the mid-1840s. Perhaps to help distinguish the three boys in the relatively small village, he later acquired the middle name George, which although it does not appear on his baptism record appears to be the name by which he was known. By 1850 the family had left Foston and moved to the neighbouring village of Allington.

George grew up in Allington, appearing there in the 1851 and 1861 census living with his parents and siblings. In 1861 he was described as an agricultural boy. His parents had another ten children after him, although two died young. There was a gap of nearly 25 years between George and his youngest sister Ada.

By 1871 George had left home and was working as a butler for the vicar of Grantham. In late 1871 or 1872 George's parents left Allington and moved to Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, where George's mother died in 1872, aged 46.

On 31st March 1873, George married Rachel Tailby at Braybrooke in Northamptonshire. She was a couple of years older than him and already had a young daughter. Shortly after their marriage they had twin sons born at Braybrooke.

By 1881, George, Rachel, and their twin sons were living at Derby, 45 miles north-west of Braybrooke. Rachel's daughter stayed behind in Braybrooke, being brought up by Rachel's parents. In Derby, George worked as a waiter. They lived at Gerard Street, to the south-west of the town centre. They went on to have another two sons in Derby in 1881 and 1883, although the youngest died as a baby. The 1891 and 1901 censuses each find George and Rachel living at 109 Gerard Street.

George's father died in 1901 at Bainton in Northamptonshire.

By 1911 George and Rachel had moved within Derby to nearby 17 Sun Street. George was described as a carver in a hotel and restaurant.

George died on 1st May 1916 at home at 17 Sun Street in Derby, aged 69. Rachel survived him by nearly thirteen years, and returned to her native village of Braybrooke after George's death.
