Rachel Tailby was born in 1843 at Braybrooke in Northamptonshire, daughter of Elizabeth Tailby, formerly Bull, and her husband Thomas Tailby, a servant. Rachel appears in the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings in Braybrooke. By 1861 Rachel had left home and was working as a kitchen maid for a clergyman and his family at the Rectory in Bugbrooke, about twenty miles south of Braybrooke. Rachel returned to Braybrooke later that year, being baptised there on 30th June 1861.

By the time of the 1871 census Rachel was working as a servant at Pitsford House, about eleven miles south of Braybrooke. Later that year she had a daughter, Violetta Gertrude, who was born at Pitsford.

On 31st March 1873, aged 29, Rachel was married at Braybrooke to a butler called Samuel George Singleton (who appears to have been known by his middle name). Shortly after their marriage they had twin sons born at Braybrooke.

By 1881, Rachel, George and their twin sons were living at Derby, 45 miles north-west of Braybrooke. Rachel's daughter stayed behind in Braybrooke, being brought up by Rachel's parents. In Derby, George worked as a waiter. They lived at Gerard Street, to the south-west of the town centre. They went on to have another two sons in Derby in 1881 and 1883, although the youngest died as a baby. The 1891 and 1901 censuses each find Rachel and George living at 109 Gerard Street. By 1911 they had moved to nearby 17 Sun Street.

George died on 1st May 1916 at home at 17 Sun Street in Derby, aged 69. After his death, Rachel returned to live in her native village of Braybrooke. Her obituary records that she was well liked and a very keen church-goer, attending services every day in the week before Easter, twice on Good Friday and three times on Easter Day.

Rachel died at Braybrooke on 6th April 1929, aged 85.

    BRAYBROOKE.
DEATH OF MRS. SINGLETON.-There passed away a few days ago a very much loved old lady, Mrs. Singleton, of Braybrooke, who had attained the great age of 85. She was in many respects a wonderful woman. She was a regular church-goer. The week before Easter she attended service every night, and twice on Good Friday, and three services on Easter Day. She helped to decorate the Church for Easter. She took cold on Friday, but continued about until Saturday morning. She passed away the same night about 10.30 p.m. Everyone liked her, and everyone regrets her death. Her sister, the late Mrs. Thomas Brown, died about a month ago. The funeral was on Tuesday, the Rev. J.R. Hakewill conducting the service. Mrs. Pulford played the organ, and the hymns sung were "For ever with the Lord" and "Abode with Me." The chief mourners were Mr. H. Singleton, Mr. G. Singleton, Mr. R. Singleton (sons), Mr. and Mrs. White (daughter), Mr. Wallace Robinson, (grandson), Mrs. R. Singleton, Mrs. Harding, Mr. and Mrs. J. Goodman (sister). The bearers were Messrs. G. Meakins, T. Robinson, A. Surridge, and W. Timson. The following wreaths were placed upon the grave:-"In memory of a loving and affectionate mother, from Harry"; "In loving memory of a dear mother, from her son George, and grandchildren, Dorothy and Marjorie"; "In memory of a loving and affectionate mother, from Ralph and Louie"; "In loving memory of dear Rachael from Essie and Jim and family"; "In loving memory of Aunt Rachael, from Wallace and Lydia and Little Nancy"; "In remembrance, from Mrs. Underwood and family and Mrs. Harding"; "In kind remembrance, from all, Mrs. Newton"; "With sympathy and remembrance of our fellow worshipper and church worker, from Mr. and Mrs. Southwood, Pulford"; "In memory of a valued friend, from Mary Andrews"; "In kind remembrance, from the Rectory"; "With much sympathy, from Betty, Billy and Lil." Mr. Pettifer was the undertaker.
