Facts and Events
In the 1860 census for Augusta, Hancock Co., Illinois, Samuel G. Shanklin is 30 from Kentucky, 'R.R. conductor', and Mattie is 27 from Kentucky. {p. 800} NOTE: I have not been able to locate this family in the 1870 census. In the 1880 census for Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas, Samuel T. Shankland is a farmer, age 49 from Kentucky (parents Kentucky). His wife Martha is 46 from Kentucky (parents Maryland). Their daughter is Lucinda, 20, born Illinois, 'without occupation'. His sister-in-law Mary Mattingly is 35, born Illinois (parents Maryland) {NARA T9-0374, p. 334b} According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert B. Shankland, Sam was at Fort Larimer in the 1890s. According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Samuel and Mattie adopted her niece Lulu Wheat about 1861. {'Descendants of William Shankland', by John N. Shankland, <www.shankland.name>, 1 Sept 2004, no sources cited} In the 1900 census for Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas, Martha is living with her daughter Lucinda and husband Stephen Wills. In Osawatomie, Miami Co, KS, Samuel Shankland, 69, born Sept 1830, is 'boarder' with Frank and Bertha (Dec 1874) Arenson, both born Missouri, who have a son named Shankland b. 1893. NOTE: I believe that Bertha may have been related to the Shankland family. References
