• Page 437.--15th April, 1784. Jemima Bradley's will--To Samuel Merritt, Military Warrant 1666 for 400 acres; also 1 interest certificate of 86 pounds, all property. Teste: John Griffin, James Stricklar, Jenet Frazer. Proved, 25th December, 1784, by Griffin and Strickland.

• Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1786--January 2, Augustine Kaiger and Catherine Spring, daughter of Nicholas Spring; surety, Saml. Merrit.

• Vol. 1 - AUGUST, 1786 (A to B). - Robert Beverley vs. Samuel Merritt and Catherine, his wife, late Catherine Clononger, administratrix of Valentine Clononger, deceased.--Writ, 4th November, 1785. (Note: this record shows that Catherine, Valentine Cloninger's wife married Samuel Merritt after Valentine's death).

• Page 352.--__ _____, 1786. William Long, of Greenbrier, by John Atkinson, his attorney, to Alexander St. Clair. John was appointed attorney to sell all the lands which William held as heir of his father, William Long, deceased. Lease of lot 2 in Staunton, corner Alex.'s store, for 66 years right to re-enter is in Beverley. Teste: James Buchanan, Robert McCollough, Samuel Merritt.

• Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1787--March 6, Frederick Keller and Jacob Bailor, surety. Frederick Keller and Barbara Bailor, daughter of Jacob Bailor (consent). Teste: Saml. Merritt.

• Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1790--February 10, John Crane and Nancy Papper; surety, James Pepper; witness, Samuel Merrit.

• Vol. 1 - DISTRICT COURT JUDGMENTS. APRIL, 1790. - Augusta Sec.--Inquisition at Staunton the 19th of May, in the thirteenth year of the Commonwealth, before Joseph Bell, gent, one of the coroners. Upon the view of the body of a person unknown in a cave, discovered by Michael Grove, John Robeson, Robert Jacobs, -- dead and much consumed and upon oaths of (the jurors who sign below) -- do say that he was a white man, and it appears to them from circumstances to be the body of a certain William R. Watson, who was an inhabitant of Staunton about November last, and that the said person has been murdered wilfully by some person or persons unknown to us. • Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1791--April 8, Reuben Slaughter and Wm. Chambers, surety. Reuben Slaughter and Mary Donnally, daughter of Andrew Donnally, now of Augusta (consent); witness, Samuel Merritt.

• Page 182.--24th July, 1799. Catherine (X) Merritt's will--To good friend and relation, Augustine Argenbright, executor, part of estate left her by her late husband, Valentine Cloninger. Teste: Jacob Swoope, Alex. St. Clair, Jenny Stuart. Proved, 23d September, 1799, presented and proved, but record objected to by Samuel Merritt, and continued, and at 28th April, 1800, record refused and appeal, and 29th September, 1801, recorded. (Note: Catherine was the wife of 1st, Valentine Cloninger and 2nd, Samuel Merritt).

• Vol. 2 - CIRCUIT COURT RECORDS. SEPTEMBER, 1799 (M to G). - John Oliver vs. Samuel Merrit and Anthony Mustoe--Debt. Writ to Augusta, 25th August, 1798. Merrit not found. Mustoe no inhabitant.

• Vol. 1 - MAY, 1800 (H to Z). - Merritt vs. Samuel Merritt.--Chancery. In 1785 oratrix married Samuel Merritt. She was a widow and possessed of considerable estate by the will of her former husband. (Note: this suit refers to Catherine Merritt and the estate of her former husband, Valentine Cloninger).

• Vol. 2 - APRIL, 1801 (A to H). - Augustine Argenbright vs. Samuel Merritt--Contest over probate of will of Catherine Merritt, with copy of will dated 24th July, 1799. "To friend Augustine Argenbright, all real and personal estate left by her former husband, Valentine Cloninger."
