Samuel Linney was born in 1850 at Linslade in Buckinghamshire, son of a plaiter named Eliza Linney, formerly Hickinbottom, and her husband John Linney, an agricultural labourer. He appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings in Linslade. The family later moved across the River Ouzel to the neighbouring town of Leighton Buzzard, where Samuel's parents had also lived before he was born. Both the 1861 and 1871 censuses find Samuel living with his parents and siblings at Parrotts Piece in Leighton Buzzard and working as an agricultural labourer.

On Christmas Day 1871, Samuel married Angelina (known as Ann) Stevens in Leighton Buzzard. They had a son in Leighton Buzzard the following year, then moved a few miles east to the town of Luton, where they had another seven children between 1874 and 1888. The 1881 census finds the family living at 79 New Town Street in Luton, with Samuel working as a bricklayer.

Samuel was not at home on census night in 1891, but Ann and the children were living at 51 Chobham Street, with Ann working as a straw hat machinist. Both the 1901 and 1911 censuses find Samuel and Ann and some of their children living at 23 Chobham Street.

Samuel died at 23 Chobham Street on 4th February 1914, aged 63. Ann survived him by ten years.
