George Linney was born in 1838 and baptised on 23rd September at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, son of a plaiter named Eliza Linney, formerly Hickinbottom, and her husband John Linney, an agricultural labourer. George appears to have been the eldest of the couple's seven children. He appears in the 1841 census with his parents at Brickhill Road in Leighton Buzzard. By 1851 George was described as a farm boy at the age of twelve, whilst still living with his parents and siblings. At this time they were living at Linslade in Buckinghamshire, on the opposite bank of the River Ouzel to Leighton Buzzard.
By 1861 the family had moved back into Leighton Buzzard and was living at Parrotts Piece. At this time George was working as a railway labourer, presumably based at Leighton railway station (which confusingly is in Linslade).
In 1864, aged 26, George married a widow named Zilpha Dimmock, formerly Finch, who was about eight years older than him. She had had four children from her first marriage, who now became George's stepchildren. George and Zilpha did not have had any further children together. The 1871 census finds George and Zilpha living with three of her Dimmock children at America Road in Leighton Buzzard. At this time George was working as an agricultural labourer, whilst Zilpha was a straw plaiter. Later in 1871 George's father John died. His mother Eliza married again in 1875.
Some time between 1871 and 1881 Zilpha and George left Leighton Buzzard and moved to Luton, a few miles to the east. In Luton George worked in an iron foundry. The 1881 census finds them living on Hitchin Road on the east side of Luton. George's mother Eliza died in 1890.
By the time of the 1891 census George and Zilpha had moved slightly up the hill away from the town centre to 106 / 106a Hitchin Road, where they appear living in two rooms in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
George died on 10th August 1904, aged 66. Zilpha outlived him by just under ten years.
