Angelina Stevens was born in 1853 at Billington in Bedfordshire, which was at that time a township in the parish of Leighton Buzzard, although it became a separate parish in 1866. She was the daughter of Mary Stevens, formerly Rickard, and her husband Joseph Stevens, an agricultural labourer. Angelina's mother died in 1859, when Angelina was just five years old. The 1861 census finds Angelina living with her widowed father and siblings at Little Billington.

By 1871 Angelina had moved into the town of Leighton Buzzard, where she appears in the census working as a straw plaiter and lodging with a family called Leech on Stepping Stones Road. She was listed as Ann in this census, and apart from her marriage all her sightings after then call her Ann rather than Angelina, suggesting she preferred to be called Ann.

On Christmas Day 1871, she married a bricklayer called Samuel Linney. They had their first son in Leighton Buzzard in 1872, before moving a few miles east to the town of Luton, where they had another seven children between 1874 and 1888. The 1881 census finds the family living at 79 New Town Street in Luton. By 1891 they had moved a short distance to 51 Chobham Street. Samuel was not at home on census night, whilst Ann was working as a straw hat machinist.

Both the 1901 and 1911 censuses find Ann, Samuel and some of their children living at 23 Chobham Street. In 1911 Ann reported that five of her eight children were still living. Samuel died at 23 Chobham Street on 4th February 1914, aged 63. Ann survived him by ten years. She died in Luton in 1924, aged 71.

    Although her name is given as Anne here rather than Angelina, it is considered highly likely that she is the same person on the basis that:
    She married later in 1871 in Leighton Buzzard as Angelina;
    No sign has been found of Angelina listed as Angelina in the 1871 census;
    There was no 'Anne Stevens' of this age from Billington in the 1861 census; and
    After her marriage she continued to generally be known as Ann rather than Angelina.
