Facts and Events
From: Dower Family Tree Samuel William Dower b 1830 d 1863 arrived Australia 1854 in "Mobile" e-mail from John Neal received 3/4/06 Samuel Dowah Bpt 31?1?1830. He married Mary Rule in Cornwall and th ey migrated (separately) to Victoria and lived at Lauriston and Kyneton "Our Dowers and Bastians all came from the same village of Crowan in Cornwall and I know that Samuel Dower, who came to Victoria ahead of his wife and children, had a son born early in 1851 and a daughter in 1855 and the wife and family sailed from Cornwall at the end of 1857 and arrived here March 1858. Samuel and his wife Mary had two more children after her arrival in Victoria but there is the long gap without children between 1851 and 1855. I think that it is highly likely that Samuel left his wife in Crowan and accompanied his brothers James and Joseph to California and this was probably in 1851 after the birth of Samuel's son. It also seems likely they met up with Thomas Bastian who had gone to California in 1851. After a year or two we know that Thomas Bastian had returned to Galena and James Dower was headed for Australia and a brother (probably Joseph)" ..... ERROR - SAMPSON, NOT JOSEPH, SETTLED IN U.S......."had decided to settle permanently in the U.S.A. If James' brother Samuel had gone with him to California he must have packed up with the others but headed back to his wife in Cornwall where his next child was born in 1855. He must have then followed James to Victoria and, after settling in, have sent for his family". ------------------------------------- -------------------------- From England: Free Marriage Index.
