Information on Samuel Clayton

From "Seldens of Virginia and allied families", Volume 2, by Mary Selden Kennedy, pub. 1911:

Samuel Clayton was of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth, born 'circa, 1681-86, died in January, 1761, daughter of Philip Pendleton, who was born in Norwich, England, in 1650, and died in Virginia, in 1721 (see Pendleton Family, Number 4). Philip Pendleton emigrated to Virginia in 1674, and visited England in 1680. On his return, he married, in 1682, Isabella Hurt, or Herd, or Hart, who was the mother of his children.

The will of Samuel Clayton is dated January 16, 1734, and recorded August 19, 1735. It makes mention of son, George Clayton; "parcel of land lying and being in Essex County, on the south side of Piscataway creek, bounded by lands of Colonels John Robinson and Owen Owens;" son, Philip Clayton; "negro boy named Tommy, also my great riding coat"; son, Samuel Clayton; "three negroes, or to the value of fifty pounds, current money;" son, John Clayton ; "three negroes, etc.;" daughters, Elizabeth Anderson and Lucy Clayton; "five negroes to each of them"; wife, Elizabeth Clayton; "eldest son, Philip Clayton"; executrix, wife, Elizabeth Clayton; executor, son, Philip Clayton. [Will Book 5, pages 349, 350, 351, Essex County, Va., Court.]

Children (data concerning whom is obtained from the above mentioned article) :

1 i Philip, married Ann Coleman.
ii George, married Delphia ; lived at one time in Hanover County, Virginia; "By index dated February 17, 1763, recorded March 21, 1763, Deed Book 29, 1761-1765, pp. 177, 178, 179, Essex County, Va., Court, George Clayton, of Hanover county, planter, and Delphia, his wife, conveyed to Nicholas Flood, physician, of the county of Richmond, land, 'situate in South Farnham Parish, Essex county, on the east side of Piscataway creek.'"
iii John. "There was a John Clayton living in Culpeper county, Virginia, as early as 1758 (see Deed Book C, p. 129, Culpeper county, Va., court). April 15, 1762, Samuel Fargerson, or Ferguson, of Culpeper county, made deed to his son-in-law, John Clayton, of Culpeper county."
iv Elizabeth, married, first, prior to 1734, Joseph Anderson, whose will was dated August 19, 1735, and recorded January 7, 1743, in Essex County, Virginia, Court. Joseph Anderson was of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, Virginia. She married, second, her first cousin, Nathaniel Pendleton (see Pendleton Family, No. 12), who was born in 1715, and died in Culpeper County in 1794. He was the son of Henry and Mary (Taylor) Pendleton, of Virginia. "For descendants, see Green's 'Notes of Culpeper County,' etc., Part I, p. 95." "Dr. P. C. Slaughter, in his account of the Clayton family in 'St. Mark's Parish,' states that a daughter of Philip Clayton, of Catalpa, married Nathaniel Pendleton. Mrs. Mary D. Micou, in her account of the Pendleton family [Green's 'Notes on Culpeper,' Part I, p. 98] states: 'Nathaniel Pendleton married his second cousin. the daughter of Philip Clayton.' As evidence to support my statement that Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Clayton of South Farnham Parish, Essex county, married, first, Joseph Anderson, secondly, Nathaniel Pendleton, see Will Book 5, pp. 349-51, will of Samuel Clayton: Will Book 5, p. 352, will of Joseph Anderson; Will Book 12, pp. 41 to 42, executor account estate of Samuel Clayton, deceased; Will Book 7, p. 23, executrix account estate of Joseph Anderson, deceased; Deed Book 23, p. 307, Ind. dated October 14, 1745, Nathaniel Pendleton and Elizabeth, his wife; Samuel Clayton, George Clayton and Lucy Clayton, to Philip Clayton. of Orange county, Virginia, gentleman. All the books referred to are of Essex county, Virginia. Court."
v Lucy, "I have been unable, so far, to find trace of her after 1745, when she appeared as a party in the deed above referred to. Perhaps she it was who married a Crittenden, instead of a daughter of Philip Clayton, of Catalpa." 3
vi Samuel, married Susannah .
