TAX LISTS: 1803 Trumbull Co., OH 1804 Jackson Twp., Trumbull Co., OH 1806 Trumbull Co., OH POLL BOOK: Samuel was in poll book of registered voters of the southern part of Trumbull County, OH in October 1802 MILITARY SERVICE: Volunteered in September or October, 1776. Private in regiment commanded by Capt. John Work(?), company commanded by Col. Worth for seven months. Joined Col. Watt's regiment, marched to Billing's Fort and then to Trenton, NJ, was in Battle of Trenton, morning of 26 December 1776, remained at Trenton a short time, returned to Philadelphia, discharged after term of three months. Drafted in August or September of 1777, under Capt. John Lamb of E. Pennsborough Twp., Cumberland County, PA. Marched to Philadephia when it was in possession of the British and was in Col. David Bell's regiment, Gen. James Potter commanded the division. Was in two months and was discharged near Valley Forge and returned home. Drafted 1778 in Sept. or Oct, Capt. Ara Hill's company (Capt. Hill lived in Carlisle), regiment commanded by Col. David Bell and Samuel Lyon, marched to "New Purchase" in the fork of the Susquehannah above Northumberland near Freeland's Fort on McClung's Bottom where Capt. Boon and Doherty and thirty men were massacered by the Indians and remained there two months. Discharged, returned to E. Pennsborough in Cumberland County, PA. He signed this declaration: "Samuel Calhoon". Had a family Bible in which his birth was recorded. Revolutionary War pension application 1 October 1832: certified that he lived 45 years in Mahoning County, OH. Previous residence: Beaver County, PA. Pension #7812, the past pension payment was made for the period from March to September, 1847 to Joseph Coit, attorney for Samuel Calhoun on 10 September 1847.
