Daily Times-News, The Monday, July 19, 1965 Rite for Drowning Victim Scheduled Final rites for Robert l Shoffner, 47, of Rt 6 Burlington will be held at St Paul’s Lutheran Church tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o’clock.

Mr Shoffner drowned at Long Beach yesterday morning at 9:45 o’clock while swimming with his five children.

Mr Shoffner and his children were swimming with the aid of two homemade plastic floats when suddenly they found themselves in water over their heads.

He and his youngest daughter Lyndall, 9, were holding to each side of one float and Robert Jr, 21, and Alan, 16 were swimming without assistance of a float.

Realizing that he was in trouble, Mr Shoffner saw that Lyndall was taken to safety. Kenneth, 13, helped Katherine, 12, to shore. Robert and Alan tried to rescue their father and Kenneth was sent for help.

When help did arrive, Mr Shoffner had swallowed too much water to be revived by artificial respiration.

Mr Shoffner, a native of Alamance County, was bookkeeper and parts foreman for Coble Farm Equipment Co in Burlington. He was the son of the late Robert S Shoffner and Mrs Joy Coble Shoffner. He was a lifelong member and congregational secretary of St Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Mr Shoffner is survived by his wife, Mrs Joyce Newman Shoffner, two daughters, Misses Lyndall and Katherine Shoffner, both of the home; three sons, Bob Hunter Shoffner, Kenneth Shoffner and Alan Shoffner, all of the home; four sisters, Mrs Baxter Thomas, Mrs. Elmo Shoe, Mrs Jack McPherson and Mrs Duncan Wells all of Burlington.

The Rev Ronald Diegal, pastor, will conduct the funeral service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The body was taken to the home this afternoon to remain until taken to the church to be in state 30 minutes before the service.
