Notes from James Allen Hager: Our Grandpa Robert Ballard Hager a horse riding rough neck Blue Bob and Bill. These Hager's while their mother wined and dined in Europe on money from coal and gas reserves and leases (probably exaggerated, but that is a Hager for Ya ). They roamed the hills. Grandpa an excellent shot and hard drinking married Ruth Clara Cook settled down - some. Worked 20 years in coal mines in Logan County, West Virginia. He took his sons to the mines to work and as they grew older they mostly went their own way. Uncle Edward first then Elbert my dad then Bill. Through the years the family of Bob Hager (Robert Ballard) owned seven Beer Gardens. The Red Gates Saloon being the most noted - grandma (Ruth) shot a few holes through roofs and doors of this place and the sons of Ruth and Bob became men in this part of Lincoln County, West Virginia. The old farm grandpa owned was the home of parts of the Hager family as late as 1956 - but over protests of my Dad and Aunt Juanita grandpa sold out. Our family lost what now is a valuable piece of property. (oh well)
