Robert D. Carlisle

Robert D. Carlisle, 83, of RD 3, New Philadelphia, died Friday at 9:44 p.m. in his residence following a serious illness for 4 weeks. He is survived by 133 direct descendants.

Born at [Dunbartonshire], Scotland, he had been a resident of Goshen Township for 72 years, coming here from Scotland. A coal miner in the Wainwright area, he retired after injuries in 1930. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints and also of the United Mine Workers.

He and his wife, the former Bertha Stoecklin, celebrated their 62nd wedding in July 1957. She died the following year.

Survivors include 3 sons, James C. of RD 4 and William S. and Robert Jr of RD 3, all of New Philadelphia; 6 daughters, Mrs. Ray Harmon and Mrs. Roberta Warner, both of RD 4, New Philadelphia, Mrs. Elizabeth Snyder and Mrs. Rebecca Clerici of RD 3, New Philadelphia, Mrs. Bertha Kurtz of Dover, and Mrs. Annie Briggs of Wainwright; 47 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; one brother John of RD 3, New Philadelphia, and one sister, Mrs. Ralph Oberst, of Fremont.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Kaserman Funeral Home with Elder William Goudy officiating. Burial will be in the East Avenue Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2:30 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

    [Roberta Carlisle] was born in her parent's home overlooking the old Erie Canal (Lock #16), State Route 16 (now 416) and the Tuscarawas River (south of New Philadelphia) on January 31, 1914. She was the next to the youngest of nine children of ROBERT DONNELSON CARLISLE, JR. and Elizabeth Stoeklin Carlisle. The Robert Donnelson Carlisle, Sr. family emigrated from Dunbartenshire, Scotland (near Glasgow) in the late 19th Centuary.
