- ↑ Richard comitted suicide in his backyard on 10-10-2004. No apparent reason. I speculate that he had watched the slow death of his brother, Harry, and was intent on not suffering through something similar. He had complained of "not feeling well" the last few weeks of his life. The week before he died, he checked in to HealthSouth Hospital on Birmingham's Southside, but they could find nothing wrong.
I think Dad just "sensed" that he was sick and that the end was near anyway. Guess I'll never know for sure.
He was an avid sportsman - played varsity baseball at Auburn University and officiated high school football around Birmingham for over 25 years. He was an excellent golfer carrying a handicap of around 2.
