Richard Cousart first appears in the Scotch-Irish settlements of Orange Co, VA, in the year 1742. On March 15th of that year, he purchased 333 acres of land. According to Mrs. S.B. (Elizabeth Stewart) Bundy of Monroe, NC, Richard was born on shipboard while his parents were en route to America. Richard is listed in Capt. John Buchanan's Militia Company in 1742 as "Rich Courser". How much action he saw is unknown. On 19 Aug 1752, Richard and Martha sold their property, today located in Rockbridge County.
The earliest source we have for the history of the life of Richard after he came to South Carolina is in the record of the lands that were granted to him by George II and George III of England. The first of these, in Feb 1753 calls for 400 acres of land in Craven County. Richard died just about the time that his community became the scene of some of the most sanguinary fighting of the Revolution. He was too old to take an active part, but it's reasonable to suppose that his end was hastened by the desolation that the conflict brought to his very front door. His home, as nearly as we can place it, was only nine miles from the scene of Buford's massacre, and the firing of the guns at Camden and Hanging Rock must have been audible from his room. Three of his sons, Archibald, Nathaniel and James, bore an honorable part in the fighting around their homes and in other parts of the state." This information was taken from the book "Down the Waxhaw Road", by James English Cousar, Jr. Richard's will was made in 1779 and proved on 1783.
