Reuben J. Tayek

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 2 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona for Reuben J. Tayek.

Reuben J. Tayek, son of Jacob and Marjorie (Burlingame) Tayek, was born April 4, 1909, on a farm near Monona. He graduated from Monona High School and received a B.S.E.E. degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1930, He completed a comprehensive extension course with the Varney School of Aviation in Peoria, IL.

Reuben started working at Western Electric Company in Chicago, IL., in 1930. Reuben was united in marriage to Elizabeth Gergen on July 16, 1930 at Mary Queen of Heaven, Cicero, IL. He earned a commercial pilot's license in 1939. He also taught various instruction programs.

Reuben and his wife traveled extensively, visiting every state including Alaska and Hawaii. Since his retirement in 1973, they took a trip around the world, Africa and Spain, where they spent a winter, Mexico, the Bahamas and cruised the Caribbean. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1980.

Reuben died peacefully at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, IA., on Tuesday, September 29, 1998.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elizabeth, who died September 18, 1994, and a brother, Robert, who died April 2, 1988.

He is survived by a niece, Kathleen Arbuzzo of Apple River, IL., cousins Donald Tayek of Monona, Edward Burlingame, Dorothy Hedemann and Marjorie Hamann, all of Elkader, Ruth Sorensen of Hood River, Oregon, Barbara Mohning of Garnavillo, Edward Kozelka of Postville and Irene Pederson of Marquette.

Pallbearers were Bob Tayek, Jason Tayek, Joe Tayek, David Trappe and Gene Trappe. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at Monona.

Reuben Tayek, 89, of Great River Care Center, died there Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, from complications of age. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Monona. Burial: church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona, where a rosary will begin at 7 and a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Survivors include a niece, Kathleen Abruzzo of Apple River, Ill.; and cousins, Donald Tayek of Monona, Irene Pederson of Marquette and Edward Kozelka of Postville. He worked for Western Electric Co. in Chicago for 40 years.
