Ramon McLuen

Perry - Ramon Lloyd McLuen aged 85 passed away peacefully December 15, 2017 at the Perry Lutheran Home in Perry, Iowa. Ramon was born January 1, 1932 at the King's Daughter's Hospital in Perry, Iowa to Howard and Della (Hechsel) McLuen.

Ramon enjoyed his childhood years with many special friends in Perry and on Beaver Creek building hideouts, trapping, hunting and fishing. He drove a milk truck and delivered milk before school and was a member of the Perry High School class of '49. After high school Ramon joined the United States Navy. He served as a boatswain's mate, BM3, during the Korean War on the Cimarron class fleet oiler U.S.S. Caliente. His Navy experience took him to Alaska, Japan, Hong Kong and other ports of call.

Ramon returned to Perry after his military service and met the love of his life Millie Hines at the Le Gourmet Restaurant where she waitressed. They were united in marriage December 14, 1957 in Pipestone, MN. and made their home in Perry. Ramon initially owned a gravel truck and was once the co-owner of the Berkeley Tavern in Berkeley, IA. and McLuen Whiteway Service Station with his brother Don in Perry. He spent many of his working years as a millwright for the Thornton Company in Kansas City and retired as a supervisor for Neumann Brothers Construction in 1987. He was a proud member of the Carpenter's Union Local 106 in Des Moines.

Ramon was a prolific collector. He and Millie collected antiques and art glass of all types. He especially loved cut glass. Ramon also collected matchbooks, pens, coins, padlocks, antique tools, Native American arrowheads and artifacts and grandchildren. He loved to hunt mushrooms and arrowheads and had a secret annual asparagus route. He loved dancing and 40's Big Band music. He showed up with his tool belt at many relative's homes on the weekends with his brother-in-law Ernie to assist with their carpentry projects. He and Millie loved to travel and spent many winters in Texas. He loved his family, enjoyed people and parties and was a generous host to all those who frequently dropped by. He loved to laugh and tell stories and was a living history book of the stories and people of Perry. He unknowingly served as a role model to many young men who were fortunate enough to know him. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Millie and two sons Pat McLuen and Craig Gimpel, sister-in-law Judy (Payton) McLuen and brother-in-law Bob Spencer. He is survived by his sister Charlotte Spencer of Atlanta, GA. and brother Don McLuen of Perry; two sons, Roy (Kathy) McLuen of Kent, WA. and Duane (Alyssa) Davis of Gowrie, IA; two daughters, Peggy (Ed) Coleman of Perry and Sally McLuen-Feldhacker of Perry and daughter-in-law Dora Gimpel of Boise, ID. Survivors include grandchildren Sonia (Juan) Ingles, Roy McLuen, Megan (Cory) Goldensoph, Patrick McLuen, Michael McLuen, Dustin Gimpel, Javier (Crishtna)Villegas Cota, Cesar Armando Cota Morales, Eli (Janet) Coleman, Seth Coleman, Grace Coleman, Zach (Heather) Feldhacker, Scott (Rachelle) Feldhacker, Talisha Davis, Travis Davis, Chealyn Davis, Artur Plyaskin and Sabrina Horton. He is also survived by many great grandchildren, dear friends and relatives.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00pm Thursday December 28th with family present from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Carris Family Funeral Home & Cremation Care in Perry. Services will be at 10:00am on Friday December 29th at Carris Family Funeral Home & Cremation Care.
