Advisory on Rachel Carothers

There is some circumstantial evidence to support Robert Wilson as the possible husband of Rachel Carothers. We know that Robert died in 1788, his wife was named Rachel, he had a daughter Rachel (apparently unmarried in his will)

  • Page 106.--14th May, 1788. Robert Willson's will--To wife, Rachel; to daughters, Rebecca Sharril, Mary Thompson, Sarah Swink; to daughters, Rachel and Martha Willson; to eldest son, William; to youngest sons, James and John. Executors, wife and sons William and James. Teste: Wm. Wilson, Samuel and Jno. Gibson. Proved, 16th December, 1788, by Wm. Wilson and Samuel Gibson. William and James qualify.

In the year following Robert Wilson's death, this marrige record is listed in Chalkley's: (note: that if Robert had died in the previous year, that his wife "Rachel" would have to give her consent to the marriage)

  • Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County - 1789--July 20, John Gardiner and Rachel Wilson, daughter of Rachel Willson (consent); witnesses, Wm. Willson, James Willson; surety, James Gardiner.

Also note that this marriage bond was witnessed by William and James Wilson, possibly the same William and James Wilson, sons of Robert, named executors with their mother, Rachel.
