PHYLES was born at Black Hill on 9th January 1874, the ninth child of Richard and Phyllis.

After leaving Scarsdale school she assisted at home at Black Hill. In 1894 she went to Cressy to help the Nelson family before and after the birth of Jane’s second child. Phyles married Edmond Shepheard in 1903 and they made their home in Brooke Street, Smythesdale. They had five children, David, Jessie, Henry and Phyles, a son, Richard, having died in infancy. Their two daughters and their families have remained in the district and take a keen interest in local affairs. The Shepheard family were regular Sunday visitors to Black Hill, walking from Smythesdale to see Grandma.

Phyles was considered delicate by her parents but celebrated her 88th birthday before she died in 1962. She is buried in the Smythesdale-Scarsdale cemetery.
