Gender Male
Birth? 14 Oct 1865 Ballarat, Victoria, AustraliaBlack Hill
Death? 21 Sep 1928 Smythesdale, Victoria, Australia

JAMES was born at Black Hill on October 14th, 1865, the sixth child and second son of Richard and Phyllis. James was named as one of the “Old Boys” of Scarsdale school in 1911 and it is believed he transferred from a private school in 1871, when Scarsdale school opened. He spent his early days at Black Hill and developed an interest in mining. We understand he travelled to the gold fields in Western Australia but unfortunately injured his back in a mining accident and was unable to work again. He also suffered for many years with miners Phthisis. For health reasons he moved to a small cottage in Smythesdale. He took a keen interest in his vegetable garden, was an avid reader and crossword enthusiast and was also quite clever at drawing. He probably suffered a good deal of pain but always maintained a sense of humour. Later in life his sisters, Sarah and Phyllis, helped provide him with meals. He died on September 21st, 1928, aged 62 years and is buried in the Smythesdale-Scarsdale cemetery.

Phyllis Wheeler Niece of James.
