Part of a letter from Irene Knight Armitage 14 January 1935 sent to me by Phil Seldon Phineas made application for a pension which he swore to April 14, 1818, and gave his age which places his birth about 1755. Following is abstract of his declaration for a pension.

He states that on 1 Feb 1781, he enlisted in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War, with Lt. James Hyde, a recruiting Officer at Norwich, in the state of Connecticut, and soon after, joined the Army at the Highlands on the Hudson River. " I was put into the 3rd Connecticut Regiment commanded by Col. Samuel B. Webb, Capt. John Riley's company; I continued in said Regiment till the close of the war, and during that time served against the common enemy. A new arrangment was made and I was placed in the company of Capt. Douglas and finally in the company of Lt. Eb. Wales and on 19 Dec. 1783 was discharged and then received the discharge which is here annexed."

BIOGRAPHY: Excerpt from file by Irene Knight Armitage January 14, 1935 received from Philip K. Seldon

A niece of Hitty (Sanford) Knight, stated that at the close of the War, Daniel Sanford, sold his farm in Saybrook, Conn; and moved to Norwich, Mass; where he bought about 400 acres of land on the "Hill". 3 of his sons-in-law came a little later, on of them was Phineas Knight with his wife Hitty. Phineas first bought land on the "Hill", set out apple trees and built a house. Later he sold this place and moved to the east side of the river to get willows to make baskets. She thinks he was from Haddam or Norwich, Conn; (no town records of his birth in Haddam or Norwich) Phineas was a man of great education for those days, genteel deportment, a great reader and scholar.

Phineas and Hitty Knight are buried in Norwich Hill Cemetery, Huntington, Mass; where a stone marks their grave. The old church on Norwich Hill still stands and I found their names on the old church record as members added after Rev. Benj. Woodbridge was ordained in 1799.
