About Philip Harper

Emigrated from Germany to America

From: DERLWOLF@@aol.com To: mperozziello@@cox.net Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 21:56 Subject: Re: Jake Painter, Martha Susan Simpson Painter

Mike, While trying to piece together my Harper Family ancestry, I became a little familiar with Your G/G/G Grandmother Margaret J."Peggy 's". family as both our lines led back to Philip Harper Sr. who came to America from Germany. There has been a lot of research done on this family. The line of Margaret's in America started with Philip Sr., Philip Jr., Adam (Mary "Polly" Vance), Joshua (Catherine Conrad), Margaret J. Margaret never married & I believe she may have had 9 children. I don't have a lot of sources for tracing families so a lot of info came from the census, Grave Reg., & family knowledge as they knew it. I didn't really want to post some of this info as it may not all be correct. I'm not certain how much would you like to know as far as seeing the census listings. The ch. of Margaret were James M., Martha Susan, Bennett, Martin K.., Mary A., William F., Daugherty, Robert, & Marg. They all went by the last name of Harper. Daugherty md. my Great Aunt & I was in touch with a descendant of Robert 's who felt that his G/G/G/Grandfather was David Simmons who was living in the household in the 1870 & 1880 census, didn't really know who James & Martha Susan's father was. Margaret was living with her Mother Catherine in 1860. Marg.'s age was given as 24, James M. age 6 & Martha Susan as 3. In the 1900 census, the listing was Ephraim Calhoun b. Oct. 1862-age 37; Martha S. b. Oct 1853 - age 47; s/s Robert R. Painter b. May 1885- age 15; s/s Walter K. b. March 1889 -age 11; s/s Jacob A. b.July 1892 - age 7; s/d Flotie E., b. July 1896 - age 3.

Well, now I'm a little confused, too. The Adam Harper who married Mary Vance is supposed to be the son of Philip Jr., who was the son of Philip the Pioneer. See for example: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dscochrun&id=I414 73

So then, who are these Harpers whom you say Marsha listed in the front of her book as a separate group of Harpers? Do you mean the descendants of Jacob the Pioneer? That Jacob had a son named Adam who lived long enough to apply for a pension for service during the Revolutionary War. But he went to Kentucky along with his father and siblings.

In addition to Jacob the Pioneer and Philip the Pioneer, there is one other as yet unconnected Harper line: Adam Harper. He first appears in the records in 1758 as being wounded in an Indian attack. This is about the same time that Philip the Pioneer first shows up in the records. Adam died in 1820 in Pendleton County. His wife was named Christina. They had six daughters and four sons: Adam Jr. (who is said to have married a Flesher), Philip, Daniel, and Jacob. [Incidentally, my research shows that this is the Jacob Harper who married Phebe Harman. In contrast, the Fuller book says that this Jacob was the son of Jacob, who was the son of Philip the Pioneer. It's a sensitive issue which others choose to ignore rather than debate.] By the 1830's only Philip and Jacob's oldest son Jesse remained in Pendleton County. It is doubtful if any Harpers living in Pendleton County today descend from them.

ID: I1170 Name: Phillip, the Pioneer, the Immigrant HERBER HARPER 1 2 3 Sex: M Birth: 26 SEP 1712 in Neiderweiler, Rheinweiler, Pfalz, Germany 1 Death: 14 FEB 1798 in Macksville, Pendleton County, Virginia, USA 1 2 Note: 1 2 1 1 2 4 2Dale Walter's research shares that Phillip Harper was baptized Sept. 27, 1712 in Neiderweiler, Rheinland, Pfalz, Germany. He emigrated to America on April 22, 1750. Phillip left Germany on August 11, 1750 on the ship, "Patience", landing in Philidelphia. Could also be Herper. Dale Walter's research shows that Phillip became a Naturalized Citizen May 17, 1774. Dale Walter's research found that Phillip served in the military 3 different times. He served in Captain Abraham Smith's Company in the Augusta County Militia in 1758 in the French and Indian War. Later Phillip was reimbursed for "Suppressing the Tories", on June 2, 1779 in Rockingham County, Virginia in the Minute Book. The July 3, 1788 Pendleton County, Virginia Minute Book states that Phillip HINKLE was Exempted from the Poll Tax, because of Military Service. Skip Harman's research state Phillip was born September 27, 1712 instead of the 26th. He also claims they were married on Jan 12, 1740. Steve Zuraff's research shares that during the French and Indian War, the House of Burgesses passed an act for the defense of the frontier of Virginia on 14 September 1758. The soldiers from Augusta County mentioned in the schedule attached to the act included Adam Harper, Phillip Harper (aka Phillip the Pioneer), and Jacob Harper (Jacob the Pioneer). Skip Harman's work states he was born on September 27. According to "A History of Pendleton County, West Virginia by Oren F. Morton originally published in 1910 page 57, "The estate of Peter Moser, killed in March, 1758, was appraised June 29, of the same year, only two months after the twin disasters of Upper Tract and Fort Seybert. The administrator was Michael Mallow, and the valuation was fixed at $366.24. In 1761 we find mention of the "sail bill" of the George Moser estate. The executors in this instance were Elizabeth Moser, Daniel Smith, and Phillip Harper. "According to A History of Pendleton County, West Virginia by Oren F. Morton originally published in 1910, current printing in 1995, page 64-65, "In 1781, took place what seems the last Indian raid into this county. A party of redskins, led by Tim Dahmer, a white renegade, came by the Seneca trail to the house of William Gragg, who lived on the highland a mile east of Onego. Dahmer had lived with the Graggs, and held a grudg eagainst the daughter of the family. Gragg was away from the house getting a supply of firewood, and seeing Indians at the house, he kept out of danger. His mother, a feeble old lady and with whom Dahmer had been on good terms, was taken out into the yard in her chair. The wife was also unharmed, but the daughter was scalped and the house set on fire, after which the renegade and his helpers made a prudent retreat. The girl was taken up the river, probably to the house of Phillip Harper, but died of her injuries."According to A History of Pendleton County, West Virginia by Oren F. Morton originally published in 1910, current printing in 1995, page 76, "Mention has been made of prices at the Dyer sale in 1759. That there was no particular advance by 1773 will appear by the sale in that year of Michael Mallow's property.22 cattle sold at an average of $5 per head, 11 horses went for $271.67, a silver watch for $13.33, a pair of boots for $1.50, and a pair of speatacles for 25 cents. There were present at this sale Thomas Bland, Michael Boucher, Casper Bogart, James Cunningham, Jacob Harper, Phillip Harper, Sarah Harman, Mary Heffner, Martin Judy, Eve Moser, Michael Peterson, and Jacob Springstone. According to A History of Pendleton County, West Virginia by Oren F. Morton originally published in 1910, current printing in 1995, page 161, the name Harper is of German origin. According to "A History of Pendleton County, West Virginia by Oren F. Morton originally published in 1910 page 393 lists Phillip Harper made claims for supplies for military use as a citizen of Pendleton County from the Court of Augustus on Aug. 18, 1775.
