Phelan L. "Phil" Lamson was the clerk listed on the School Census Reports of Gallatin County for Sedan District #66 in 1911 and 1912 with wife Eliza and child Grace.

P.L. Lampson (misspelled) is first listed in the Polk directory in 1906 as a livestock breeder in cattle living in Sedan (formerly known as East Flathead Township) Sedan was a country postoffice 30 miles N.E. of Bozeman and 12 miles west of Wilsall, Mt. The town of Sedan no longer exists. (in future directories 1907-1925 he is listed as P.L. Lamson). He continued to live in Sedan raising livestock until 1922. His residence is then listed as Wilsall where he paid taxes on 1200 acres of land. He is listed in Wilsall from 1922-1925 and then he disappears from the tax rolls and directories. There are no listings in the cemeteries around Bozeman for any Lamson's. Chances are if he died he is buried in some little plot around Wilsall.

He was a rancher in Sedan who previously owned the Fastje Place. He and a neighbor, John Inabnit, had a "fine threshing machine." Liza, Mrs. Allison and Mrs. Foreman were sisters. Lamsons were said to have had goats and turned them loose on all the brush around their place and the goats killed it off. Lamsons are listed on School Census Report of Gallatin County for Sedan District #38 in 1910 and District #66 in 1911 and 1912. Phelan L. Lamson is listed as the clerk on both of those reports.

My grandparents, Phelan Lamson and Elisa Cook met while working in Yellowstone National Park around 1904.  Phelan had traveled to Livingston Montana from Oregon and drove stagecoach from Livingston to the newly completed Inn at Old Faithful where my grandmother, Elisa Cook was one of the first cooks in the restaurant in the Inn.  As a side note, the Old Faithful Inn is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year.  My wife and I drove up there a few weeks ago and it is a quite spiritual experience, knowing that one's ancestors lived and worked within those walls that have changed very little in the past century.  Anyway, back to their story.  They then left the park sometime before my mother's birth in 1909 and resided for a short period in Bozeman, MT before purchasing a ranch in Sedan, MT, some 20 miles away in a remote corner of Gallatin County where they resided until the late 1940's.  When time allows, I can get some more accurate dates, but Phelan died in 1949 from complication of diverticulitis (sp).  Elisa died in 1957, also in Bozeman.  Both are buried there.   To this union was born only one child, my mother Grace Irene Lamson.  She met my father Lawrence Harold Blattie when he arrived in the community to become the cheesemaker at the local cheese factory.  He was born in Titonka Iowa, September 21, 1909.  If you have any interest in tracking his side of the family, I do have a quite complete family tree back to the 1600's in Switzerland where his father had immigrated from.  His mother's maiden name was Cathryn Spieck.  My father's mother, Cathryn, died while he was very young from TB and as a result, dad and his siblings were "farmed out to several neighbors while growing up.  Dad, along with a friend, headed west when he was 17.  It is an interesting note that my father and one brother changed the spelling of their last name by adding the "e" to the end.  He never told my why, nor have any of his siblings but I suspect it was his manner of protest because my grandfather split the family up following my grandmother's death.  On mystery that died with him. Dad first landed in Ballentine, MT and worked on a dairy farm.  He learned of the need for a cheesemaker at Sedan so headed another 200 miles west.  I am not completely clear about the exact details, but either while he was at the cheese factory, or immediately following, he went to work for my grandfather, Phelan where he ended up marrying the bosses daughter, Grace.  They were married in 1930, in Sedan, MT and resided on a farm there, next to my grandparents.  They had three children prior to my birth, (this is one instance of the Sedan website being inaccurate) a set of twins that died at birth and a son who died at about two.  He was ill his entire life and he and my mother spent over half of his life in Minnesota at the Mayo clinic.  I can get exact dates when more time allows.  I am writing this morning from my memory as my wife and I have just moved into a new house and have yet to finish unpacking so I can find my materials.  Following is a link to a website about the Sedan Community.  If you click the "residents" link you can scroll down to information about my parents, although not 100% accurate, it is a source of some information. http://home.mcn.net/~lmzupan/

The Independent-Record, Helena, Mont., Sunday, June 30, 1946 Phelan L. Lamson OF Bozeman Dies at Age of 73

Bozeman, June 29 Phelan Leroy Lamson, a resident of Montana since 1896, is dead at 73. Born in Goldfield, Iowa, he made the overland trail trip across this state with his parents at the age of four. The family located in Oregon. On attaining manhood, Mr. Lamson chose Montana for his home and settled in this area as a ranchman. (January 1896)

Mr. Lamson married Elisa A. Cook in 1902. She survives, with a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Blattie, of Sedan.
