Phoebe Beales Canaday was disowned from the Quaker church after marrying Robert Sumner as he was not a Quaker at the time so the marriage was "out of unity." Robert later became a Quaker and the family was received and restored to membershipo in Fairfax, Virginia MM, Loudon Co., VA.

In 1751 the family moved to NC. They were members of the Carver's Creek MM in Bladen Co., NC in Feb of 1751, the Cane Creek MM in Orange Co, in July of 1751 and finally the New Garden MM in Guilford Co., NC in 1754.
