BOWATER BEALS was born about 1725 possibly in Pennsylvania. He died 2nd month 9, 1781 in Orange County (now Alamance), North Carolina. He married 10th month 2, 1752 Sarah Ann Cook, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Underwood) Cook at Warrington Monthly Meeting in York County, Pennsylvania. Among those attending and witnessing the wedding were Alexander Underwood (the bride's grandfather) and his second wife Sarah (Bowater) Beals Underwood (the groom's mother). In 1753, 1st month 6, the Cain Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange County, North Carolina, accepted Bowater and his wife from Fairfax Meeting, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In 1761
the "travelling preacher", William Hunt (who was a cousin of the famous travelling Friend, John Woolman) started a trip through North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. His companion for this preaching trip was Bowater Beals who was uncle of Hunt's wife Sarah. When they visited Warrington on the journey they stayed with Bowater's mother who was now Sarah (Bowater) Beals Underwood. In 1779, 1st month 30, Bowater was recommended a minister. His service only lasted a little over two years. He and Sarah are among the first thirty families in the Cane Creek settlement who expressed a desire for a Monthly Meeting.
