Nicholas Martneau, "gent." of a family of French Protestants who had taken refuge in Belgium. He sailed from England in the spring of 1620 in the "Frances Bona Venture." He acquired and settled on a tract of 1,300 acres along the York River near Chesapeak Bay in Virginia upon which the Battle of Yorktown was fought. He married Jane, the widow of Lt. Berkeley soon after the Lt.'s death in 1627. Image Gallery
