My name is Janet Alexander Blackwell and I have just read your letter in the OPD newsletter for September and have also looked at the info on the web you have of Jennings Nix. On my mother's side of the family I am Rochester and Nix. On my father's side I am Alexander and Chapman. The Nix side is the one I do not have very much info on yet. I have just seriously started researching this year. My mother's name was Vernice Marzell Nix, her parents were John Henry Nix and Ella Mae Rochester. His mother was Nicy Ann (Nica) Nix and my family has said that his father was a Bradshaw from Georgia. Nicy's parents were Billy "William" Nix and Ina (Elizabeth ?) Littleton of Oconee County, South Carolina. One of Nicy's siblings was Talley Nix which I have heard my family speak of and he was a brother to Nicy from the second wife, Seleta. >From the Keowee Courier from October 26, 1955 it reads "Nix dies from heart attack" "Talley B. Nix, well known resident on the Pickens highway near Walhalla, was found dead at his home Wednesday morning. Medical examination showed he succumbed to a heart attack at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday. Coroner J. W. Manley told the Courier there would be no inquest since Mr. Nix died of natural causes. The body is at Abbott Funeral Home in Seneca." Also the informant from my great-grandmother's death on her death certificate says Esco Nix of Walhalla, SC. I am assuming this was a grandson or granddaughter of Nicy's if they belonged to Emma. My grandfather John Henry Nix was born January 14, 1881 and died January 11, 1954, he is buried next to my grandmother Mae Rochester Nix (March 10, 1891- December 18, 1985) at Oconee Memorial Gardens between Seneca and Walhalla, SC. This is also where my mother is buried.

I would love to learn more about this side of my family which just happens to tie in on my Alexander side also.

I live in Inman, South Carolina with my husband Steve, but I grew up in Pickens, SC. I have one daughter, Katherine who is in college. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

On Nicy's death certificate it is listed that she is buried at Rocky Knoll. I think actually she is buried across the road from Rocky Knoll church and church cemetery in what is known as the Neville Family Cem. . The problem is that there are alot of graves with just a rock as the marker and no writing on them. I contacted Neville Hardware in Walhalla to see if they had a map as to whom was buried there and they didn't. So I guess I will never know exactly which one is her's, I have asked one of my aunt's and she didn't know either. I just wish I had started more of this years earlier when there were more relatives still alive to ask, oh well.

Nica was banned by all her family because of her misdeeds. Upon questioning Aressie about the �misdeeds�, it was discovered that Nica had several children out-of-wedlock. [3]

In the 1900 Census, it is noted that Nica is a widow, and was the mother of (6) children of which only two were living in 1900.

Nicey Alexander was living with her daughter in 1920 Census, a widow, the mother of (6) children of which only 2 were living. John Henry was living with his Aunt Sallie Littleton Head.

On the death certificate for Nica, her name is listed as Nicey Arcie (or maybe Anne) Nix. She is listed as widowed, date of birth unknown. She was born in Oconee County, SC. Her father is listed as Billie Nix, born Oconee Co., her mother as Ina (possibly Emma) Littleton, born Oconee Co. She dies Dec. 21, 1926 and is buried at Rocky Knoll. Her grandson Esco Nix, gave the information on her death certificate.

Trying to connect with descendants of Nica Nix b. Dec. 1858 in SC. At one time she may have married a Mr. Alexander. She was the daughter of William Nix and Elizabeth Littleton.

She had at least 2 children:
John Henry Nix b. Jan 1881
Lillia (sic) Emma Nix b. July 1883 married and widowed by the age of 16 to a Mr. Sexton.

John Henry Nix married Ella Mae Rochester and had several children. They lived in Oconee and Pickens County of SC and around Ashville, NC.

Emma married a Styles Murphree and was widowed at an early age. She had several children possibly out-of-wedlock.
Ecrum or Esco was born about 1902-1904
Barnie was born about 1905-1907
Carria (sic) Mamie born about 1908 - 1910
John Henry born about 1919

I believe Emma died before 1930 - all the children were living elsewhere - little John Henry was listed as the adopted child (1930) of Mills Hubbard and wife who were in their 70's.
