From Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:
- Vol. 2 - Page 105--Thos. Gassaway deposes, in Berkeley? (Frederick?), 1810, aged 86, he knew Joshua Hains, brother of Mary Collett, wife of Daniel Collett, who was alive when he left that part of the country where James McCormick lived and went to the Southward and was dead when he returned. He also knew Grace Haines. Deponent came to Virginia from Maryland about 1762. His deposition was formerly taken in Charleston and in Smithfield; has a son of same name.
- Vol. 2 - Page 117--Nathan Hanes deposes, 4th September, 1810, in Jefferson County, aged 56, he came into possession of the land in 1774. (Note: immediately follows record listed above).
