Advisory on Moses White

Some sources claim that this Moses White is the father of Isaac White, b. abt. 1718, Robert White, b. abt. 1718, and John White, b. abt. 1718, William White, b. abt. 1720, Hugh White, b. abt. 1722, and also Moses White, who based upon his marriage date had to be most likely born before 1721. This is problematic because there is doubtful that he could have fathered this many children in a very tight time frame.

Specific problems:

1. The only children that were of adulthood, based upon the writing of Moses White's will in 1757 (listed below), were Hugh, John, Robert, Moses, Elizabeth and Jane 'Jean' White, most likely the children of his first marriage with Mary 'Polly' Campbell. This would leave William, James, Henry, Sarah, Agnes and Isabel as the likely children of his second marriage with Isabella Cochran.

2. The William White named in Moses White's will was clearly born after 1736 (not yet age 21 at the writing of his will, in 1757.

2. There is no son named Isaac named in Moses White's will, which makes it unlikely that this Moses White was his father, unless he died prior to 1757.

Will Abstract

The will of Moses White in Lancaster Co PA is dated 05 Oct 1757 and names 12 children plus his wife "Esabel".
Children: sons William (when come of age making his birth less than 21 years before 1757 = born after 1736); James (when come of age= born after 1736); Henry (when comes of age = born after 1736); Hugh, John, Robert, Moses (all born before 1736), daus: Saray (when comes of age = born after 1736); Agnes (when comes of age = born after 1736); Esbel (when comes of age = born after 1736); Elizabeth, Jean, (both born before 1736)
...appoint my brother William Cochren Executor.
Witnesses: Ephraim Litl; Patrick Montgomry; John Wilson.
Proven 26 Oct 1757.
Note: Moses calling William Cochren his brother indicates they were brother-in-law, so Moses' wife Esabel in 1757 might have been named Esabel Cochren?
Moses Sr gives 1/2 land to Hugh and 1/2 to William (under age 21). Moses Jr had moved to NC in 1749. I think Hugh might have been oldest son since he is named first and gets 1/2 holdings?

William gets other 1/2 provided he pays inheritance to other minor children. This could also imply (strongly) that Hugh & older children were born of Mary (getting 1/2) and younger children were born of Esebel Cochren (getting 1/2)? We assume there was a remarriage after the death of Mary Campbell, and more than one wife would explain the large number of children (15) attributed to him. Also, some sources place Mary's birthyear at 1682 which would make her over 50 at birth of children born after 1736.

A number of descendants of Moses White removed to North Carolina and have been called "the Alamance", "the Chatham" and "the Anson" Whites. Two governors of North Carolina: W. Kerr Scott and Robert W. Scott were descendants from these families.

Hugh White's descendants migrated to North Carolina settling in the Rowan/Iredell area some going to Tennessee where one founded the city of Knoxville. Hugh White's son Henry settled in the Waxhaws section (now Lancaster County) SC.
