27 July, 1995 Moses enlisted in the Union Army 13 Aug., 1862, Pittsfield, IL under Captain Hull. He was enrolled by Captain Rathbone in Company G, 99th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers 30 Aug., 1862 at Florence, IL. His enrollment record states he was 27 years old, 5" 6 1/2" tall, had light hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. He lists himself as a farmer in Pike County, IL All we now know about Moses is in a copy of his military record obtained from the National Archives and published accounts of his unit's service during the Civil War. Moses applied for a disability pension from the government 18 March, 1879. His Declaration for Original Invalid Pension states "on or about 20 Aug., 1863 he was taken with Chronic Diarrhea superinduced by overheat in march from Vicksburg, Miss. to Jackson, Miss." It further states that he was in hospitals "at Vicksburg & Memphis, Tenn. and New Orleans, La." At the time of his application, he was a resident of New Canton, IL., a farmer and " he is now partially disabled" by the illness received in the service of the United States. His declaration is signed with his "x". Although there is no record showing he received the pension his wife, Mary Jane, applied and received a pension after Moses died 2 Aug., 1880. Where Moses is buried is uncertain since no headstone has been found. Troy Stanley, his grandson, believed his grave is in the Shearer Cemetery, New Canton, IL. where Moses' in-laws, the Pfrimmers, are buried but no grave has been found. A Pike County, IL researcher thinks it may be in the Morey Cemetery, Pike County or as was often done when folks were short of money, the family buried the person in an unidentified grave in a field . The following is a direct quote of Moses' army service from the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, in response "application for Pension No. 276,329." After the description of Moses' enrollment as a Pvt., described above, it reads: "on the Muster Rolls of Co., G of that Regiment (the 99th IL Volunteers), for the months from muster in to June 30, 1863, he is reported present. July and Aug. 1863 reported on furlough from Aug. 16/63. Oct. 63. return shows him: Reported deserted Oct. 17/63 by order of Maj. Genl. E.O.C. Ord. Nov. and Dec. 63 present.
