Facts and Events
MICHAEL HAGER, son of Phillip Hager Sr., born between 1770 and 1780 first appears in Wythe County, VA. He then appears on the 1798 (1802) and 1806 tax list of Kanawha County, Virginia and the 1810 tax list of Cabell County, Virginia. He married about 1806 to Martha. He was drafted in the War of 1812. He then patented land on Six Mile in 1815 along with his nephew, James Hager. Many of his descendants are buried on this land which started about 20 poles from "OLD CALLEYS" grave. A resurvey of this old survey might put "Old Calleys" grave near the present Doutin Stolling s Cemetery. During the 1820's, Michael got into the same trouble that Solomon Mullins got into in Kentucky, left this area and went to Ross County, Ohio, where he died about 1844. It is unknown where his wife died or where either is buried, but Michael did own land there. Michael may have moved to the Boone County area as early as 1798 but most certainly appears on the 1802 and 1806 Tax records for Kanawha County, Virginia. I believe the statement above that he appears in the 1798 Kanawha County, Virginia tax list is really the 1802 tax list. They do not appear on the Tazewell County, Virginia Tax records for 1802. Michael and James Hager made their homes on Six Mile Creek and James later moved to the Mud River in Lincoln County, West Virginia. They patented land on Six Mile Creek in 1815. He first appears in Wythe County, Virginia. He then appears on the 1798 and 1806 tax list of Kanawha County, Virginia and the 1810 tax list of Cabell County. Mikes Fork of Hewett Creek, West Virginia was named for Michael Hager who lived across the mountain on Six Mile Creek. Michael reared a large family and after getting into trouble, it was said he was a counterfeiter, he took the younger children to Washington Court House, Ohio. Below are the references for several court cases regarding Michael and Andrew Hager. Michael left Virginia between the 1830 Logan County Census and the 1833 Taxes. From Janet Hager, It is reported that he had a bond to report to trial and never returned for trial. His bondsmen was later sued.
