Children of Richard Temple and Mary Barker: Mercy, b. 1721 (?); m. --- Newton. [Note: This source has question marks/estimates for 6 children, but apparently did not take advantage of the will, and the ordering found there. So its estimates apparently give an incorrect birth order. Probably the worse error resulting from this is placing Mercy last instead of as the 2nd oldest daughter. The author's reason for placing her last is presumably simply because she was left-over, as he doesn't know her husband's name, when she married, age at death, or any of the clues that can help arrive at an estimated birth. The will tells us she is younger than Mary, older than Deborah. This places her in the period from 1705-1710 when the children's births were not recorded. Her marriage in 1729 confirms this. The estimate here of about 1705 is based on her husband's birth in 1703, and to break up a long string of male children (suggested by the odds of such a sequence). But technically, we only known she comes before Deborah.]

Joshua Newton [#237] m. Lancaster 21 Oct 1729 Mary Temple. "The mother of his children is named Mercy in evey case." Cites Source:Ward, Andrew Henshaw. History of the Town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, which says "His [Richard Temple's] daughter Mary, was admitted to this church in 1728, married --- Newton of Southboro', and was dismissed to the church there in 1743." [Note: the author, and apparently others, have been confused by the interchangability of Mary and Mercy, but as daughter Mary m. William Harris and died as Mary Harris, we should assume that any talk of marrying Mr. Newton is meant to refer to Mercy, who was named Mercy Newton in her father's will. Ms. Leonard has identified the Mr. Newton for us, her knowledge of the Newton family allowing her to catch an apparent error in the Lancaster record (Nathaniel, instead of Joshua, apparently repeated from the adjoining marriage).]
