Personal History

Melissa Williams (1847-1925)

After her sister, Janette (Williams) Wright died giving birth to her first child, Helen Janette (Mocco) Wright, Mocco was at first raised by Melissa and Janette's mother, Sally (Coy) Williams. As Sally and Mocco grew older, Melissa took Mocco in and continued raising her with her much younger son, Elton. As Mocco recalls, her step-mother Alice O. (Seek) Wright was not kind to her which explains why she was raised by her grandmother and aunt instead.

As a young teacher, Mocco taught in a 1-room schoolhouse that included her cousin Elton as a student. On at least one occasion, Elton was reported to have bee a troublemaker to his 15-year-older cousin in her class. As a result, Elton's grandfather (and Melissa's father), George Simmons told Mocco he would help her by sitting in her classroom one day. This apparently worked and she had no more discipline problems.
