Obituary:

Obituary of Maud E Chandler Ocober 17, 1952, continued from previous source. Another memorial fund was established by her son, Luther L. Chandler, to be used in the current building project of James Archer Smith Hospital; at which his mother was many times a patient. He said that ny who preferred to give to this fund might do so. Maud Elnora Snell was born in Hutchinson, Minn., on Thanksgivign Day in 1871 and came to Florida with her family when she was 14. She grew up in the Lake Okeechobee region and received most of her education at home from her mother. At 17, she became a school teacher. In 1894 she married Allen Luther Chandler and they lived near Kissimmee until 1906, when they moved with their three children to Dade County. For a time they lived near the present community of Howard, then called Benson and later moved to Silver Palm Dr. near the present Lions Den. Mrs. Chandler taught for a year or more at the little Silver Palm School across from their home. In 1903 they bought land further west on Silver Palm Dr., set out a grove and in 1912, built the home in which Mrs. Chandler lived at the time of her death--2 yeras after that of her husband. One of the highpoints of Mrs. Chandler's life was the period from 1932 to 1936 when she went to China to visit her brother, a physician and missionary there. She stayed more than two years, taught in her brother's school and learned much of the Chinese way of life. From that time on her interest in the Chinese people and culture continued and she kept in close touch with friends made there. On the trip home, she visited Eqypt, Palestine, Italy, France and England. For a few years thereafter, Mrs. Chandler made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Walker, in Goulds, but when the World War II housing sourtage developoed, she moved back to the old home, remodeled it into apartments, and started a new business venture at the age of 74. She also built up a plant business and sold plants by mail.

Her interest in art continued. She presented every Methodist parsonage in South Florida with one of her paintings and exhibited in several Miami shows and in every show held by Homestead Art Club of which she was a charter member. In addition to Mrs. Walker and Luther Chandler, Mrs. Chandler is survived by: another daughter Mrs. Goodloe Warden of Manchester, Tenn., who arrived here Monday for the funeral; a sister Mrs. Sam J. Davis of Homestead, three brothers, O. C. Snell and R. L. Snell of Missouri, and R. W. Snell of Mississippi; six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
