Extracted from the Oscar Doane Lambert Book:
Matthias Lambert was the first of his line to arrive in America. He came as a German immigrant from teh Palatinate province located in the upper Rhine Valley to Philadelphia. The exact date of his arrival can scarcely be ascertained by it was approximately 1730. However, it could have preceded that time a few years. In 1740 the Parliament of England passed and act of naturalization that required all Protestant foreigners who had settled in the American colonies for seven years or more to "be baptized in a Protestant or a Reformed Church" and to take an oath of allegiance to the British Government. At the April term of the Supreme Court , sitting at Philadelphia in 1748, Matthias Lambert of Lancaster County, having taken the sacrament of baptism, subscribed to that oath. In view of the fact that he had taken up his first boundary of land in that county in June, 1734, his arrival in America must have preceded that date only a short time, and it was probably the same year. For some reason he, like many other aliens, had not signed the registration record upon his arrival but when the law required all aliens to subscribe to the new regulation it was a compulsory matter.

On June 12, 1734, Matthias Lambert acquired from the colony of Pennsylvania, one hundred acres of land located in Lancaster County. Being a man of aggressive industry, he took up another boundary of one hundred fifty acres on March 22, 1741. Three years later (Feb. 28, 1744) , he added a third tract of one hundred fifty acres to his growing estate. When York County was formed in 1749 the lands of Matthias Lambert were incorporated in Manchester Township with the boundaries of the new county. Here he labored and, by wise management, he prospered. His farm lay in the fertile valley of Codorus Creek where thrifty crops grew from the virgin soil.

It was here that this pioneer reared his family under favorable circumstances and eventually left to his widow; Ann Reesin, and each of their five children a small dower. It may be noted in his will hereafter attached that the names of the children were George, Jacob, Casper, Ann and Catherine.

The eldest son of Matthias Lambert, George Lambert, had migrated a few miles away from the homestead into Frederick County, Maryland. There on the headwaters of Antiertam Creek, February 17, 1744, he took up a farm. The new farm he named Lambert's Park, which contained two hundred acres.

Later the owner divided his land into lots which indicated that he anticipated a town be built there. This was the period when the first settlers began to arrive in that region. In the title it is designated that Lambert's Park was more definitely located on "The North side of a branch of Antietam near the mouth of a run that comes from Capt. Charltons and falls into the aforesaid branch and running thence South," etc.

The limestone foundation still remains of the first residence. There is also a gravestone with the inscription "Heir Liegt Eva Lambert und ihre Tochter. War alt 59 Jar." (Here lies Eva Lambert and her daughter. She was 59 years).

    Conrad BECKER or Coonradt BAECKER.

The name in its German spelling was Coonradt BAECKER, with two dots over the ae. While the family lived in York County it was known as the Conrad BECKER family. Just when the different children began to be known by the name of BAKER is not known ~ however, we do know that long before the John BAKER branch left Pennsylvania the name had taken on the American pronunciation of BAKER instead of BECKER.

Our research and investigation has brought out the following story of this ancestor and his family:

Coonradt BAECKER, along with two brothers, arrived in the United States on the boat, Snow Betsie, in the port of Philadelphia on August 27th, 173According to the requirements governing the immigrants to the United States at that time, this ancestor was born about the year 1720 in Germany and was one of the so-called Palatin Immigrants. The Palatins were a group of Germans who were seeking religious freedom.

Came to America in 1733 and had land in York and Lancaster PA.

We have been unable to trace his whereabouts during the period from 1739 to approximately 1753. It was approximately 1753 that he was married and in all probability in York County, Pennsylvania.

Conrad BECKER married Catrena LAMBARDT, whose parents lived in York County, about the year 1753. It is impossible to learn anything definite other than this.

Catrena LAMBARDT was the daughter of Matthias and Annreecin LAMBARDT. The name LAMBARDT was written LAMBERT on the Will of Matthias LAMBARDT by the Recorder of York County who recorded the will.

To the union of Conrad and Catherina LAMBERT BECKER was born seventeen children. We know nothing of any of these children or their families except two and those two are the twelfth child, Conrad, who was the grandfather of the Conrad BAKER who was the Governor of Indiana during the years 1867 and 1868, and the fifteenth child, John, who was the father and head of the John BAKER branch concerning which this record is being written.

For your pleasure and interest we will first give you a copy of the MATTHIAS LAMBARD WILL and then a copy of the CONRAD BECKER WILL. After reading and studying these two documents, if you are still interested you will find study of the division of lands in York County in these early years very interesting and you will also understand why we have built up the history of this family in the way we have.
