The Palatinate ( from , palace; Pfälzer dialect: Palz), historically also Rhenish Palatinate, is a region in south-western Germany. It occupies more than a quarter of the German federal state (Bundesland) of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz). Historically in union with Bavaria, Palatinate itself covers 5,451.23 km sq in area.
