    Capt. Matthias Button, born Apr. 22. 1732 at Westerly R. I.; died July 22, 1811 at the residence of his son, Joseph in Wells. Vt. He married May 16, 1753 Phoebe (Brown) Butts, widow of Joseph Butts; she had married (1st) Dec. 6, 1748 to Joseph Butts and had two children by him, Stephen and Nathaniel. After her death, Mar. 3, 1764, Matthias married July 10, 1764 at Canterbury. Conn., Elizabeth Butts, fourth child of Josiah and Elizabeth (Williams) Butts. Matthias had five wives in all and children by four of them. His fifth wife survived him.
