Handwritten Note in Marriage Affidavit: "That the order purporting to be from L. B. Price is bonafide and genuine. That the o [illegible] signed by said L.B. Price, that my father is dead + that said L.B. Price is my guardian."

However, since the only existing source with what seems to be his signature is the marriage certificate, Mathis is listed as the preferred name here. The two initials can be found in all sources, and the middle name, Monroe, is unproblematic, it having been passed down to his son Horace Monroe and entered in the 1900 census.
