Mary Ann Ware was born on 13th February 1804 at Wells in Somerset, daughter of Edward Ware and his wife Mary. She was baptised there three months later, with her baptism recording that the family lived at Tucker Street.

Mary's next sighting is when she was 34 years old, by which time she was living in Yeovil and working as a servant. She was married there on 7th March 1838 to a shepherd named James Hutchings. He was from the hamlet of Woolminstone in the parish of Crewkerne, and that is where Mary and James spent the early part of their marriage, appearing there in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. They appear to have had three children together. The 1851 census records Mary Ann simply as Ann, suggesting she may have been known by her middle name.

Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family moved about fifteen miles to the west to the parish of Churchstanton on the Devon / Somerset border (it was then in Devon but has subsequently been transferred to Somerset). The 1861 census finds them living at the former New Inn in the hamlet of Acombe in Churchstanton.

Mary Ann's youngest son, James, died as a young man of 22 in 1867. Her husband James died two years later, aged 57.

The 1871 census finds Mary Ann living with her son Edward, who had married a couple of weeks earlier. Mary Ann at this time was described as a pauper. The position in 1881 was similar; Mary Ann was still living at Churchstanton with Edward and his wife and children (Mary Ann's grandchildren) and the census was explicit that she "receives relief from parish".

Some time between 1881 and 1890 Edward and his family moved about seven miles north west to the town of Wellington, bringing Mary Ann with them. She died in Wellington in 1890, but was buried back at Churchstanton on 20th March 1890. She was 86 years old.
