James Hoare Hutchings was baptised on 22nd December 1844 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of a shepherd named James Hoare Hutchings and his wife Mary Ann. James appears to have been the youngest of three children. He appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings in the hamlet of Woolminstone, in the rural part of Crewkerne parish away from the town itself. Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family moved about fifteen miles west to Churchstanton on the Devon / Somerset border (it was then in Devon but has since been transferred to Somerset. The 1861 census finds James and his parents and brother living in the former New Inn public house at Acombe in Churchstanton, with James working as an agricultural labourer.

James died as a young man of just 22 years old, being buried at Churchstanton on 10th March 1867.
