James Hutchings was baptised on 4th September 1812 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of Ann Hutchings, formerly North, and her husband William Hutchings, an agricultural labourer. He appears to have been the youngest of four children. The family appears to have lived in the hamlet of Woolminstone in the parish of Crewkerne rather than in the town itself; James sometimes gave his place of birth as Woolminstone in the censuses, and when James's mother died in 1836 her abode was given as Woolminstone.
On 7th March 1838, aged 25, James married a woman called Mary Ann Ware at Yeovil. They then returned to Woolminstone, where the 1841 census finds them were living next door but one to James's father William. They also had a young daughter named Margaret. They had another two children born in the early 1840s, sons named Edward and James. The baptisms of James's sons record a middle name of 'Hoare' for James, and in the 1851 census he is recorded with a middle initial H, but the middle name does not appear on his baptism or any other records found to date. James's father William died in 1849. The 1851 census finds James, Mary Ann and their three children still living at Woolminstone. James was described as a shepherd by this time.
Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family moved about 15 miles west to Churchstanton on the Devon / Somerset border (at the time it was in Devon but has subsequently been transferred to Somerset). The 1861 census finds them living there in a hamlet called Acombe in the former New Inn public house which had recently been turned into two homes.
James's youngest son James died as a young man aged just 22 in 1867. Two years later James died. He was buried at Churchstanton on 6th June. He was 57. His abode was given as Bakers, another hamlet in Churchstanton parish. Mary Ann outlived him by several years and appears in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with their son Edward.
