Colonel Robert Slaughter (5) {Robert (4); Francis (2-3); John (1)} born in Essex County about the year 1702. Died in Culpeper in 1768. He was commissioned Captain of Militia on Sept. 2, 1729, later Col. of Militia. In 1758 an act was passed (Hening's Statues) authorizing payment of L-218 to Col. Robert Slaughter for services of himself and forty men, sent by order of the Council to garrison Patterson Fort. He was Vestryman of St. Mark's Parish 1731; Church Warden; Member of the House of Burgesses 1742; Presiding Justice for Orange County 1745. His name is included in a list of Virginia Gentlemen, who between 1739 and 1750, imported English blooded horses, and who were interested in the turf. He married about 1723, Mary Smith, daughter of Augustine Smith of Essex County. Issue: 11. I. ROBERT 12. II. WILLIAM 13. III. THOMAS 14. IV. FRANCIS 15. V. JAMES 16. VI. LAWRENCE 17. VII. I, Fannie Slaughter Bell, resident of Dallas, Dallas County, Texas; born Boyle County, Kentucky, June 28, 1868; married George Emmett Bell, July 3, 1889, Winchester, Franklin County, Tenn.; hereby apply for membership in The Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims by right of descent from Captain John Slaughter, Captain Francis Slaughter, Sheriff Francis Slaughter and Robert Slaughter, all of Virginia. John Slaughter was born Gloucester County, England, died Rappahannock County, Va.; Captain Francis Slaughter. born l630; Sheriff Francis Slaughter, born 1653; Robert Slaughter born 1680; Captain John Slaughter died Rappahannock County, Va.; Captain Francis died 1656, Rappahannock County; Sheriff Francis Slaughter died 1718, Richmond County, Va.; Robert Slaughter died Essex County, Va., 1726. Captain John Slaughter commissioned by Sir Thomas Howard March 17, 1638 (Collin's Peerage, Vol. 1, p. 114); Captain Francis Slaughter was Captain of Militia, Justice for Rappahannock, planter and merchant, his only son, Francis Slaughter, was sheriff of Rappahannock County, Va.; Robert Slaughter was successful planter and patriotic citizen.

  1. I am the daughter of Benjamin Gabriel Slaughter, born March 8, 1845; died April 10, 1915, and his wife Lucy Nance Osborne, born September 6, 1847; died May 30, 1921; married September 3, 1867.
  2. The said Benjamin Gabriel Slaughter was the son of Gabriel Stout Slaughter, born August 7, 1809; died April 13, 1850, and his wife Eliza (Elizabeth) Drake, born February 11, 1812; died February 12, 1867; married November 16, 1831.
   3. The said Gabriel Stout Slaughter was the son of Austin (Augustine) Smith Slaughter, born February 5, 1769; died September 6,1845, and his wife Susannah Fisher, born 1778, died August 3, 1829; married February 12, 1801.
  4. The said Austin (Augustine) Smith Slaughter was the son of Col. Robert Slaughter, born 1724, died 1790, and his wife Susannah Harrison, born before 1745, died after 1785; married February 11, 1750.
  5. The said Col. Robert Slaughter was the son of Col. Robert Slaughter, born 1701/2, died 1768, and his wife Mary Smith (daughter of Captain Augustine Smith), born July 20, 1736; died Essex County, Va. (William and Mary Quart., Vol. 14, p. 44); married June 6, 1723.
  6. The said Col. Robert Slaughter was the son of Col. Robert Slaughter, born 1680, died 1726, and his wife Frances Anne Jones, born 1680 or later, died Virginia (Mag., Vol. 30, No. 4, p. 337); married 1701.
  7. The said Col. Robert Slaughter was the son of (Sheriff) Francis Slaughter, born 1653, died 1718, and his wife Margaret Hudson, born Virginia (Mag., Vol. 21, p. 308).
  8. The said Francis Slaughter was the son of Captain Francis Slaughter, born 1630, died 1667, and his wife Elizabeth Underwood, born Essex County, Va., died Virginia (Mag., Vol. 21, p. 307); married 1652.
  9. The said Captain Francis Slaughter was the son of Captain John Slaughter, born before 1600, probably 1585, died Rappahannock County, Va., and his wife; married before 1630.
   [Extra Information, Service in Army or Government.--Both Cols. Robert Slaughter served in capacity of Col. in Colonial Wars and were members House of Burgesses; Captain Francis Slaughter was Captain of Militia, Justice of Rappahannock County, Va., his son Francis Slaughter was Sheriff of Rappahannock 1685; Col. Robert Slaughter, 2d of that name was First Church Warden St. Mark's Parish, was commissioned Captain of Militia September 2, 1729; later Col. of Militia in Colonial Wars. An Act of the assembly 1758 was passed to pay Col. Slaughter and 40 men to garrison Ft. Patterson 218 pounds sterling (Henning's Statutes). His wife Mary was daughter of Captain Augustine and gr. daughter of Col. Lawrence Smith, of Colonial fame.]

Robert Slaughter (1702-1769) married in 1723 Mary Smith, daughter of Augustine Smith and Grand-daughter of Major Lawrence Smith. In William & Mary Quarterly, Vol. 14, page 117 is a sketch of family of Col. George Read. It states that his son, Robert Reade had a daughter Mildred, who married as her 2nd husband, Col. Lawrence Smith and the children by this marriage were---Margaret, Catherine, Robert, Lucy and Lawrence."

Robert second, married Mary, daughter of Capt. Augustine Smith (1723), a son of Col. Laurence Smith, who was one of the most distinguished Virginians of his day. Capt. Smith was civil engineer and surveyor in the company of fifty, under Governor Spottswood, 1716, styled "the cocked hat gentry," of the old Dominion, to whom it is accredited, went to lift the blue veil, which once hid from the eyes of the white man the fair face of nature in the Valley of Virginia.
