BURIAL

Documents indicate that Mary Ellen Getty was first interred in Greenwood Cemetery, St. Albans, VT, then in 1933 her remains removed to Soldiers' Home National Cemetery, Washington D.C. although it unlikely that she is really in a military cemetery - see the following note. Vermont, Vital Records, 1760-1954 state that Mary Ellen, daughter of Joel Rollins and Myra Ring, died September 4, 1913 at Richford, Vermont. A Transit Permit on a State of Vermont Standard Certificate of Death for Mary Ellen states that "This permit with above certificate, must be presented to initial baggage agent and delivered with body at destination, St. Albans, Vt, Nov. 21 1933' and continues "Permission is hereby given to remove for burial at Washington D.C. the body of Mary Ellen Getty above described ....." [signed] by the City Clerk. Written by hand at the side of the Transit Permit is the note "This body removed from Richford Vt, June 11, 1913 and buried in Greenwood Cemetery, St. Albans Vt, June 12, 1913". A Certificate of Death, District of Columbia with the details of Mary Ellen's death also contains the following: Item 19. Place of Burial, Cremation or Removal - Soldiers' Home Nat'l, Date - Nov 22, 1933. Item 20. Undertaker - M. J. McArdle?, Address - US Soldiers Home, D.C. This last document is reinforced by the fact that Find-A-Grave records Mary Ellen in US Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery Washington District of Columbia.

Mary Ellen's death was reported in the St. Albans Messenger (St. Albans, VT), page 5, Sept. 11, 1913 and reported that she was aged 43 years, wife of George W. Getty, and died Thursday morning of bronchitis. The funeral was held at the house Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. J. H. Wallace officiating, and the burial was at Hillside cemetery. It was noted that Mr. and Mrs. Getty had moved to Richford from Cowansville, Que., but a few months ago, and lived on Foundry St.
