Mary and her first husband, Timothy Pennington, moved into "The wilds of Kentucky" near Crab Orchard, Lincoln County to be near Mary's sister Ester Gill Fullen , wife of William Chapman Whitley, the Indian fighter. Mary & Tim's first child, Ephraim Pennington, born about 1786, oldest of 7 children was born at Crab Orchard.

Timothy died in 1801 and his widow, Mary, married again in 1804 to George Hedrick, a neighbor in Lincoln Co., Kentucky. Subsequently they travelled west to Calloway County Missouri, taking the two youngest Pennington children with them. Isabella "Ibby" and Levisa were the two youngest. The rest of the Pennington children stayed in Kentucky with Ephraim.
