Address 1: 278 Circular St., Tiffin, Ohio

Matz wore many hats in his day - street-car, barn operator, saloon owner, and in his later years, he worked in the U.S. Tiffin Glass Company under his oldest son as a glass packer.

He was some pinochle player, in his later years.

He was made guardian of Clara Shultz, when her father "Gus" Shultz, Marshal, was shot and killed in 1895, until she left her temporary home with the Ursuline Sisters to go into the Army as a nurse.

Martin and [brother] Charles Shultz were owners of the Shultz Restaurant, 58 E. Market Street, Tiffin, OH, from 1890 to the 1900's. Charles "Charlie" lived above the saloon.

Eventually "Matz" bought out Charlie and Matz carried on alone. "We had to go to work sweeping up, chopping wood for the fire, clean spittoons, polish the mirrors and any task needed to keep the saloon clean and neat for the Customers." Brother and sister had to scrub all the bar towels for their pin-money.

Come Easter-time, Matz's wife Lena and Florine colored a bushel of eggs for the patrons! That is not a lot of "Bull"! That's a lot of eggs, confirmed by his son Otto, who lent a hand many a time.

"Shultzie" sold the saloon to Robert Marks and went to the street-car line on Melmore Street to work for many years.

Matz had a stroke the day before their Golden Wedding Anniversary, he never really recovered from it until his death.
