Martin Shaffer, a well known resident of Garrett, passed away at his home, 106 South Ijams street, Sunday morning at 3 o'clock as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident three weeks previously. Mr. Shaffer and son, Ralph, were on their way to visit Mr. Shaffer's brother at Frontier, Mich., when their car struck loose gravel in the center of the road near Camden, Mich., and skidded into the ditch. The machine turned over, Ralph was under the car and was severely bruised, but his father was unconscious in the center of the highway. His injuries included fractures of a collar bone and a thumb and a slight skull fracture. He was a patient at Sacred Heart hospital for six days and then was removed to his home. The shock received in the accident was too great for a man of his age and it proved fatal. Mr. Shaffer was born in Lancaster county, Pa., and was seventy-five years of age last August 30. The family formerly resided at Corunna and came to Garrett from Kendallville thirty-one years ago. Mr. Shaffer was formerly a Baltimore & Ohio carpenter and later was on the city police force. For several years he acted as the Garrett agent of the Kendallville laundry, which is operated by his son-in-law. Mr. Shaffer and Rachel Lehner were married fifty-three years ago last March. She survives, with six children. They are William Shaffer of Toledo, Mrs. Thomas E.(Nettie) Conway of Chicago, Mrs. C. H.(Ada) Kimmell of Kendallville, Mrs. J. C.(Maud) Link of Fort Wayne, and Herbert and Ralph Shaffer of Garrett. One child is dead. There are also surviving a brother, George Shaffer of Frontier, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Friend of north of the Sixteen church. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Garrett Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Lynn Young officiated and interment was made in Union cemetery, northwest of Garrett.
