Funeral services for the late Herbert Shaffer, a Baltimore & Ohio locomotive engineer, were held at the home at 604 South Cowen street, Garrett, Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Lynn W. Young of the Garrett Church of Christ officiated and burial was made in Calvary cemetery. Mr. Shaffer died Thursday after week's illness. He was operated upon at Scared Heart hospital Oct. 23 for appendicitis and peritonitis. Mr. Shaffer was born near Corunna, Oct 15, 1881, a son of Martin and Rachel Shaffer. The family moved to Garrett in 1897 and Herbert entered the service of the Baltimore & Ohio as a shop employee in June, 1902. He began work as a locomotive fireman the following September and was promoted to engineer Dec. 2, 1905. Mr. Shaffer and Mrs. Lena Fulk were married Nov. 29, 1913. His father died Oct. 30, 1928. Surviving are the mother, who lives at 106 South Ijams street, Garrett, the widow, a daughter, Anna Kathryn, 14, two stepchildren, Mrs. Donald Alford of Deshler, O., and John Fulk, of Fort Wayne, three sisters, Mrs. C. H. Kimmelll of Kendallville, Mrs. J. C. Link of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Edward Conway of Chicago, and two brothers William Shaffer of Toledo, and Ralph Shaffer of 108 South Ijams street, Garrett.
